A gratitude journal app for iPhone that meets you where you already tap

The hard part is not the sentence. It is remembering to write it.

TLDR: Most gratitude journal apps for iPhone wait for a reminder you will snooze. Gratlock uses the open of Instagram (or whatever you lock) as the prompt: one sentence, then your apps, then a private journal on the device.

Why paper and “three things” apps stall

You buy a notebook. You last nine days. Or you download Presently, 365 Gratitude, Good Things, Day One, and a reminder fires at 9 p.m. while you are in a group chat. The blank page is polite. The feed is not.

Day One’s own gratitude tips still assume you will sit down and be descriptive. That is good advice for people who already journal. It is a weak cue for everyone else. See Day One on gratitude journaling.

BuzzFeed’s write-up of Presently is typical of the category: daily ping, backup, mood lift if you keep it. The “if” is the product. Article: I tried a daily gratitude app.

What the research actually says

Gratitude practice is not magic, and it is not nothing. In 2025, PNAS published a meta-analysis of 145 papers, 163 samples, 727 effect sizes, and 24,804 participants. Gratitude interventions produced a small, consistent improvement in wellbeing across cultures. Paper: Choi et al.. PubMed: 40627390.

“Small” is the honest word. You will not become a different person. You might notice the coffee while the house is quiet, because you had to name it.

Pair the journal with the habit you already have

Screen time tools already know how to interrupt an open. The AER 2022 trial found self-set limits cut about 22 minutes of app use a day over 12 weeks: Digital Addiction. The one sec PNAS study found a delay made people abandon 36% of gated opens: Grüning et al..

A gratitude journal app for iPhone can sit on that interrupt. You were going to open the app anyway. Spend the interrupt on a sentence instead of a spinner.

How Gratlock works

  1. Choose distracting apps with Apple’s picker. Gratlock cannot see the names.
  2. On open, write one thing you are grateful for right now.
  3. Unlock for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, or the rest of the day.

No streak. No public feed. Export is a text file on your phone. Delete the app and the journal is gone, because it never left the device. That is the point, not a bug. Privacy policy.

When a classic journal is still better

If you already write long entries, use Day One or paper. Gratlock is one sentence on purpose. If you want prompts about shadow work and 365 themed days, other App Store titles do that. If you want the next Instagram tap to produce a line you can reread in February, this is the design.

Paper people in the same family of products may already know Journal Party. Affiliation is fine; the jobs are different. Journal Party is for the notebook on the table. Gratlock is for the phone in your pocket.
